Where we live
In 1935, Erwin Schrödinger created a thought experiment in the field of quantum physics. In it, he stated that if you place a cat and something that could kill the cat (a radioactive atom) in a box and sealed it, you would not know if the cat was dead or alive until you opened the box, so that until the box was opened, the cat was (in a sense) both “dead and alive”. He used this experiment to represent how scientific theory works.
As creatives, as explorers, as coaches and as artists, outside the box is where we live. We don’t know if our efforts will ultimately succeed, or fail. We live in that third place, the place of tension that can drive us, challenge us, force us to consider, re-consider, test, seek knowledge, and open ourselves to possibility.
We don’t truly know what lies ahead, success or failure. The unwritten ending to the story of our future is outside of our control. All we can focus on is the work in front of us, and the care and attention we choose to bring to it.
