A lotta advice
Heres the thing with looking to the Internet for inspiration. There is too goddamn much of it.
I imagine in the "old days" if you wanted a jolt of inspiration, to probably talked to someone wiser than you and they gave you an answer cobbled from their experience and also the experience of others (in a weird never-ending loop). And thats where it ended. You took that advice, mulled it over and lashed ahead.
With the Internet, literally every day I can read 10 different articles on how to get out of the stands and into the game, how to have the 5 most creative ideas of your life, how to inspire others with 3 simple lessons etc. Thats all well and good, but whats not happening is...well, anything! Clicks beget clicks and the further into the rabbit hole of advice I go the more pumped up about the possibilities I get, but then also the greater the comedown. Like an advice high.
Most of the the people writing these articles have maybe published well regarded books/blogs/both on the subject and most have done something; set up a business, work at a high level in VC or consultancy firms. Mostly USA based. Easy to give general advice. I know it too from the SPWC, I could give advice all day, but I recently realised that its all well and good but everyone is different. The way you hear my ideas, the way you describe them to your team, the attitude of the team to my ideas...all huge hoops for an idea to jump through.
People want a quick fix. Where do I get the money? Who do I talk to? How much did that cost you. Then they go away and do the rest. Part of advice giving is maybe to take a step back and offer some light advice and let them do the rest. Here are some words in sheeps clothing..."Do you know what you should do?"
