Season 3 Introduction - The Freelancer Season

A short introduction to Season 3 of The First 10 Podcast where I focus on freelancers

Season 3 of The First 10 Podcast will focus on Freelancers, and this episode is a short message about why.

I know that a significant portion of my audience are freelancers and I wanted to focus on that industry for these upcoming episodes, to talk to freelancers who are making it work, who have found (or are finding) their first 10 customers and discovering what they are doing so that you can learn from them.

Hey there, everyone. Welcome to season three of the first 10 podcast. I'm your host, Conor McCarthy. And in each episode of this season, I will interview Business Builders on their first 10 customers, who they were, how they found them, how they talked to them, and what effect they had on their business, so that you can learn what worked and what didn't. When I'm not recording podcasts, I help Business Builders find their first 10 customers and grow their businesses. I do that through one to one coaching, and a series of online workshops. please do check out my website Conor mccarthy.me. For more details, and you can sign up to my regular newsletter there. I wanted to do a short introduction episode here. Because I'm trying a bit of an experiment this season. I know that a significant portion of my audience are freelancers. So we wanted to focus on that industry for these upcoming episodes, to talk to freelancers who are making it work, who have found or are finding their first 10 customers, and discovering what they're doing so that we can learn from them. Before we get into this, I want to talk a little bit about the difference between freelancers and entrepreneurs. For a long time. I didn't understand this distinction. Even though I had been both in my life. It wasn't until I heard Seth Godin more clearly defined them that they made sense. So according to set, freelancers get paid only when they work scale isn't really an issue for freelancers because they're doing the actual work. Entrepreneurs on the other hand, they make money when they sleep. So they typically build a business to sell, for example. So maybe they go out and raise money to grow their business, which then means that they have investors who eventually want their money back and hopefully with something on top. And the only way that's going to happen is if you build something bigger than yourself, with all things There are, of course, grey areas and edge cases here. For example, an entrepreneur might have been a former Freelancer who scaled a business by hiring other freelancers so that they no longer work with clients directly, but instead focus on growing the business. If you look at your career as a series of projects, which is something that I do, a person can shift from entrepreneur to Freelancer and back again several times, some people wear both hats at the same time. So I included this short definition here because I think it's important to choose the type of work you want to do in any one moment. Not only does it help to focus your efforts, and hone your skills in a specific direction, but it also gives other people a very clear perspective on the work that you do. So for this season, I'll be chatting to people who do the actual freelancing work, they market themselves, they take the responsibility to hone their craft, and they deliver their own services, they may outsource parts of their process in the background. But when a client picks up the phone, the person the client calls is the freelancer herself. Okay, that's pretty much it for the intro. The guest this season are really fantastic. I can't wait to introduce you to them, and I can't wait to share all our conversations. Lastly, just two small housekeeping notes for me. Along the season, I'm releasing a new peer accountability group called the freelancer marketing habit. My goal is to help freelancers get more freelance clients by working with a community of committed freelancers to develop a great marketing habit. I've seen the compounding power of a good marketing practice firsthand, and I can attest to the results that it creates. as a freelancer. Your job isn't to freelance it's to market your freelance services. So the freelancer marketing habit is 30 days long. And for 30 minutes every day, all we do is work on marketing your freelance services. It's for coaches, consultants, designers, if you're a freelancer, you're more than welcome to join, check out my website, Conor mccarthy.me. The link is in the show notes as well. The second thing is a favour I have to ask. I'd really really appreciate it if you could take two minutes to jump on iTunes and leave a review of the first 10 podcast. It's really really valuable, a lot more valuable than you would think. And it will help me to continue to grow the podcast and get amazing guests like I have had and continue to find. Also, I'll be designing and posting some of the reviews on my social media channels. So you might even see your name in lights. Okay, short episodes. Thanks for being here and do reach out if you're a building business.
