Thoughts on Seth Godin’s Permission Marketing
So in a recent post I committed to reading all of Seth Godin’s books this year, and I’m off! I started with Permission Marketing, and as I start to type, I realise that a simple book summary has been done umpteen times. Just Google it!
So what can I add? As I read it, I kept being reminded of the classes adage about what makes good friendships work. You need 2 of the following 3 items:- Frequency (do you see each other often?)- History (Have you known that friend for a long time?)- Wavelength (Do you “get” each other?)
Of course, there isn’t a direct parallel, but the idea that you can actually gently befriend a customer, stay in regular touch, build a real relationship, and speak to them about the things they want to hear about struck me as being friendship-like. Friends are there for each other, and while you might not want to invite all your customers to Thanksgiving, the posture of really caring about how you interact them is where the gold is hidden.
