Enhancing Work

Most people don't relish heading to the office every day but we tend to ascribe outsize meaning to our jobs.

For example, 70% of US college graduates say they get their sense of identity from their work.

AI's role in the workplace intersects with our search for meaning and identity in our career journeys.

For example, by automating routine and repetitive tasks, AI can unshackle employees from some of the everyday slog work that often obscures the more purposeful aspects of our work. This can allow us to engage in more complex, creative, and strategic tasks that are intrinsically rewarding and suit our identities better.

Zooming out, AI can also facilitate career development, offering insights into skill gaps and learning opportunities, hinting at places we might get a sense of progress and achievement.

Its what Clayton Christensen called “motivation factors”, which includes challenging work and personal growth.

AI doesn't just streamline efficiencies and cut excess labour; it can enhance our individual subjective experience of work itself, allowing us to find significance and identity in our roles, ultimately increasing our workplace satisfaction.

As a leader, how are you using AI foster more fulfilling career journeys for your team?
