Hello, hello, and welcome to the first 10 podcast. We've all heard the saying, if you build it, they will come. But when it comes to creating new businesses, the reality is more like, if you build a Dell probably do nothing. Every successful company that you can think of started with their first 10 customers, those early believers in your idea are crucial to your success.
Take this story from Airbnb as an example. Legend has it that in its very, very early days, its founders Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia, had a meeting with Paul Graham, the co founder of the world famous startup incubator called Y Combinator based in California.
Paul asked the two co founders wish your business slightly confused, they replied, what do you mean? And he said, Where's your traction? And they replied, Well, there's a few people in New York using it. And he responded. So what are you still doing here?
He said, Go to your users, get to know them. Get your customers one by one. This is the only time you'll ever be small enough that you can meet all your customers, get to know them and make something directly for them. Even for a giant like Airbnb, it all started with those early customers.
If you're a founder, a bootstrapper, a freelancer or just curious about what it takes to start a business, I think you're going to love this podcast, where the focus is on Business Builders and their first 10 customers. I'll talk to business owners about things like who those first customers were and what made them tick, about how they found them and how they talked to them, and what effect they had on their business so that you can learn what worked and what didn't.
So by now, you might be thinking, Okay, this sounds great. But who is this guy? My name is Conor McCarthy. I'm a former software engineer turned entrepreneur and business coach, I coach Seth Godin, Alt MBA and akimbo workshops, where I help bootstrappers build their businesses, freelancers to find better clients, and small business owners to get the essentials, right. I help Business Builders of all types to get their first 10 customers. As an entrepreneur and coach who helps people succeed in their business.
I live this conversation, and I really love the stories that emerged when we scratched the surface of those early days. So let's go. My goal for this podcast is to help you succeed in finding and creating those first customers. I hope you enjoy the show.
