Strong characters, weak beer
What makes a TV character strong? Weaknesses…it makes them more relatable. I feel that this fact is something that (good) TV writers understand as the most basic thought, it not even addressed any more. A good guy (Superman) is actually quite boring, because there is nothing he/she can’t do! People prefer Batman. Or think Homeland, Carrie is HUGELY flawed but you can’t help but watch as the car crash that is her life slowly unfolds, and all her flaws get repeatedly exposed. Nobody is perfect, but thats why you have friends and family. Different perspectives lead to different outcomes and you never know where advice is going to come from.
Every article I read about Jack Dorsey from Twitter mentions his belief in Wabi Sabi, the Japanese tradition about having something perfect but with a tiny flaw or blemish. Thats where the interesting bits are. Give me an old mans pub over a super-bar any day. Give me a crappy hostel over a 5 star hotel. The unknown is really, really attractive.
(There is an analogy somewhere here with craft beers and mass produced, weak stuff. Taste, over consistency…hm, needs work ;) )
