Armour vs. Shield

People change, but far slower than the world does. Navigating our daily lives often means keeping nimble in our thoughts, and often demand that we are ready to re-assess our beliefs and take a second look at our values.

How do we stay true to our values and beliefs, whilst keeping an open mind to new and sometimes challenging information? How do we integrate new best practices into the scaffolding of thought that we all create for ourselves?

When we wear our beliefs as a suit of armour, the heaviness of that armour can hold us back.

However, if we were to yield them as a shield, we can still avail of their protection but keep an open mind to what's possible.

But doesn’t that armour protect is from the things we can’t see, from fears we think exist? It sure does, but to quote Mark Twain “I am an old man and have known a great many troubles, but most of them never happened.” The fear that is right in front of you is the only fear worth facing.

Wearing armour can literally wear us out, so next time you feel the fear, give yourself a break and try a shield on for size.
